Mission Statement
Brai2n: Brain Research center Antwerp for Innovative and Interdisciplinary Neuromodulation.
The philosophy of Brai2n can be summarized by a quote from Albert Einstein:
"The grand aim of all science is to cover the greatest number of empirical facts by logical deduction from the smallest number of hypotheses or axioms."
The mission of Brai2n is therefore to develop novel neuromodulation treatments by investigating the common neurophysiological mechanisms clustering groups of pathologies, such as the thalamocortical dysrhythmias and reward deficiency syndromes. A new line of research will aim at the development of new neuromodulation techniques for the study and treatment of disorders of global and self-consciousness, as a logical extension of the work on sensory consciousness (phantom percepts). The reach and extent of the research of Brai2n is both its weakness and strength and success can only be guaranteed by an extensive collaboration with basic neuroscience researchers, engineers, functional neuroimaging experts and clinicians from non-neurosurgical fields. Regular contacts with neurophilosophers and moral philosophers helps to guide the translation into clinical application of the available basic neuroscientific data.
